History of the Harley Panhead Motor
Chronologically, the panhead engine followed close upon the heels of the earlier knucklehead. First produced in 1948, the panhead is a 45-degree, pushrod, 2 valve per cylinder V-twin. Like most early H-D motors, was so nicknamed because of the unique shape of the rocker covers - they look like an upside-down pan. Like its predecessor, the panhead was manufacturered in two sizes:
- 61 cubic inch / 1000cc: 1948-1965
- 74 cubic inch / 1200cc: 1948-1965
