History of the H-D Knucklehead Engine
List most early Harley-Davidson motors, the Knucklehead got its nickname in the 1960's from the unique shape of its rocker boxes - specifically, the round knobs on the covers that look like knuckles. The motor was manufactured in two different displacements over the course of its career:
- 1000cc / 61" - 1936-1947
- 1200cc / 74" - 1941-1947
At the time the Knucklehead was in production, it was referred to as the OHV.
